What Are the Advantages of Using Plastic Pallets?

In any form of business, improving the efficiency in the supply chain is one of the greatest challenges faced. This refers to the ability of any business to be able to transport goods from one place to another at an affordable cost.

While this is true that companies are always looking for better ways to transport their goods in a more cost-efficient way, they do not want to do it at the cost of safety or by making the entire process complicated.

When transporting or storing goods over long distances or over large periods of time, companies usually pick either wooden or plastic pallets. While both of them serve the same purpose, plastic has a lot of advantages over wood when it comes to transportation or storage.

We will discuss some of the advantages of using plastic below.

Reusability:

Plastic pallets have a longer lifespan than wooden ones. According to research, wood is only good for about 3 consecutive uses before it has to be discarded. This means that businesses have to incur substantial costs on replacement and repair costs. In contrast, plastic can be reused in excess of 50 times. It, therefore, makes more business sense to use the latter.

Moisture proof:

When wooden pallets come in contact with water, they absorb moisture and become fragile. This proves to be a huge disadvantage when it comes to transportation or storage. Plastic, on the other hand, is moisture proof. They do not get affected even if they are soaked in water.

Less space required:

When it comes to shipping, wooden pallets tend to be inconvenient to use since they are required to be stacked on top of each other and this takes up a lot of space. More space, in turn, incurs higher shipping costs. Plastic tends to be cheaper to transport since it does not need to be stacked and consequently takes up less space.

Exempted from ISPM-15 regulations:

  • The ISPM -15 regulation requires that all wooden pallets that are being used in international shipping be specially treated with heat and methyl bromide before they can be used. This is to prevent the spread of diseases since wood attracts all kind of insects and fungi.

  • This additional treatment costs businesses extra if they decide to use wood. Additionally, if the wood being used is not compliant with the regulations or the proper paperwork is not in place, this could lead to delay in the shipment as it is liable to be detained by authorities at the port.

  • Since plastic does not attract vermins or bacteria that can lead to diseases, they are exempt from the ISPM regulations. Using plastic means that businesses will incur lesser costs when shipping them. Furthermore, they will also be transported faster since there will be no cause for unnecessary delays owing to compliance or paperwork.

  • As is evident from the aforementioned points, plastic pallets have innumerable advantages over wooden ones when it comes to shipping or storage. It should come as no surprise to anybody that with every passing day more and more companies are switching to plastic to meet their needs.
